A stream in front of the farmhouses
In my hometown，there is a stream flowing straight in front of the farmhouses. It was very clear in my childhood. However, I was shocked to see it again when I
was back last Spring Festival. It was almost filled and leveled up by the rubbish.
Where does the rubbish come from? It is obviously from the villagers living nearby. Why didn’t it happen ten or more years ago? I guess it is because we didn’
t have so much living waste as that of nowadays. The rubbish includes many kinds
of plastic bags, cups, bottles , some breezes, and waste cloth and paper. Some
rubbish was burned. But as we all know, burning rubbish can’t solve the environmental problem. On the contrary, it can pollute the air , soil, and even the water. But how can the villagers do? They have no better place to throw or deal with the rubbish.
As Environment, an authoritative magazine in China, says that 12 millon tons of
living rubbish in the villages has piled up in the open air every year. And almost no rubbish processors are existed or in operation in the villages. So the relative facts are that nearly 30 million villagers are drinking unqualified water
in China and 15 million mu of the infield are polluted.
Maybe we are shocked by the facts. But what I saw near the stream in the village
may be even more shocking. Many geese, ducks and other poultries are finding their food from the rubbish. Seeing this, I know why SARS and other diseases had appeared. These diseases can make animals ill and soon infect the human being. If
they have aroused the attention to the medical system, I think now it is time to arouse the attention to the environmental improvement in our countryside. The
reason is very simple. It is because our food must come from clean and unpolluted places.
And I can imagine the reasons why so many young villagers want to leave their home to work very hardly in the cities. I think there are three main reasons-----
fewer opportunities to get enough education, fewer opportunities to make lives better, and the living conditions which seems to be getting worse.
So I think the officials must not only say something, but also do something! It
will be very difficult, but it should be done. To set up more devices to store and reuse the rubbish in the villages is urgent. To move or shut up the factories
which have polluted the environment is urgent. And many things should be done at once. We hope the government should do something sound for us.
