Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you
Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you - Concerns about environmental pollution
The topic of environmental pollution is a thorn in my heart. It always reminds me of an uneasy and painful feeling whenever the topic is mentioned. Now Rosemary ’s article entitled “A Stream in Front of the Farmhouses” has again reminded me of an unpleasant event happened just recently.
Last week, a series of reports about a new kind of environmental pollution in China have aroused wide public concerns and angers. It is reported that a British cargo ship has dumped two hundred thousand tons of garbage into a small Chinese coastal town in Guangdong province. As the report goes, those British companies have benefit greatly by doing so. On one hand, they receive their government subsidy for garbage disposal; and they gained even more by “Selling” them to Chinese companies at the same time. What a deal!
Unfortunately, this kind of wicked trading happened in China more than just this time. Look:
(1) September 1993, seven South Korean companies ferried 1228 tons of sewage, corrosive chemical wastes into Nanjing Harbor in the name of fuel oil. (2) June 1995,678 tons of foodstuff bags, beverage bottles, canteen were imported from Germany in the name of “waste plastic”. (3) March 2005,a British cargo ship full of food garbage, waste plastic, old clothing, waste batteries was caught at Rotterdam, Holland just before it was heading for China. (4) Since 2004,over 500,000 tons of waste plastic, electronic/chemical wastes , paper and chipboard have been imported from European continent.
Need I list more of such events? Now, do you believe any justice in this world? Do you still believe their Liberty, Equality and Humanity? And where are they? Frankly speaking, the Chinese local government officials should be blamed without question. They are always blindly enraptured by the number of GDP and totally ignored the high price we have already paid for keeping the rapid economy growth rate. But to a certain extent, Chinese companies can be excused for their absence of speciality knowledge, for their lack of technology to properly dispose those garbage and their numbness, unwisdom, blindness and short sight…
Whereas, the western countries must be strongly condemned for their double-standard of liberty, equality and humanity. They are fully aware of what they are doing to Chinese people. They have enough money and technology to deal with garbage . Still they choose to dump wastes to other countries. Do they have the priority and privileges to harm other people in other countries? I remember a British gentleman told us a few years ago that his country has solved the environmental problems and fish have returned to Themes River. Now I know how they solve their problems!
“Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” This is what our ancient philosopher Confucius said 2500 years ago. I hope politicians in western countries remember this!
