Mazatlan, Mexico Vacation. 2.
On the plane I wore a face mask given to me by my physician -- and I didn'tcatch a cold. You probably have read that the airplane companies cut down fresh air into the cabin and recirculate the warm air that is there to save on heating costs. This makes for lower oxygen content and the circulation of viruses. Many people, therefore, catch colds or the flu. I was determined to try to avoid having it during my golden days in Mazatlan.
The first seven days of our vacation were completely respiratory illness free. :-)) When I went to the washroom on the plane, and waited in line where the full planeload of passengers could see me, many of them stared, and I could tell they were wondering about the mask. I told the stewardesses why I was wearing it and they weren't worried. I wonder what those fellow passengers imagined? As you can see, it is almost never done to wear a face mask in public in North America. I know its common in Japan, and perhaps in other countries, but not here.
We were up at 7 am and had breakafast at home on the day we flew up. It was the 9th of Jan. The cab we pre-ordered the day before arrived and we left home at 9 am and flew to Vancouver at 10:30. We picked up luggage, put our two big bags into storage, made a phone call, and went to have an airport lunch of salad and pizza. Both were large and very good, so we took the seafood salad to our hotel for dinner. We phoned Jeannie and arranged to meet her the next day at the airport at 2 pm at the Bill Reid sculpture. Tamara calld twice. First was with instructions to us about safety. She had just heard about a young Canadian man who danced with the girlfriend of a Mexican. Later the Mexican shot him. She told us not to dance with any Mexicans. Such a dear daughter -- it was highly unlikely that we would, but it's nice to be cared about. :-)) Later she phoned again and asked if we could buy a tortilla press for their restaurant.
The hotel where we stay is owned by Chinese people. Various family members do the work of the place and they also have other hired staff. We like it for a number of reasons. It has an airport pick-up and delivery van service which costs us only a tip. We get a spacious non-smoking room with a kitchenette. It has underneath the building parking where we leave our vehicle when we drive to Vancouver and which doesn't cost us anything while we are away. The room windows aren't accessible from outside due to its architecture. Owners are steadily upgrading it. (It once was part of another large chain but seems to have been let deteriorate. Now it is also part of a chain. Although some of it is still run down it has all the amenities of the former large chain when we want them, such as a well-equipped exercise room. It has a pleasant and good restaurant and the prices are acceptable.
The owner of the restaurant is a Chinese woman named Lucy. Since we have been going there for quite a few years now we have an ongoing friendly relationship and always visit with her. Ben went down to check if the renovations of Lucy's restaurant in the hotel were complete, and she was back yet from her vacation in China. She was. He didn't see any renovations and suspects it was a polite reason for being closed for a month. Lucy is a very friendly, bright and capable woman. Her restaurant is homey and pleasant. She always has the same staff. I think they are also family. We look forward to seeing her. This time she was just closing, so Ben was the only one who did. We went to bed about 11 pm.
