Dear forum friends:
I am so sorry that I am so late in posting my first letter. It seem there was
a small problem in sending.
My husband and myself have been away from home visiting our daughters.
We have one daughter in Arizona who is a doctor, one in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada, who works as an auditor for a large power company,
and our eldest daughter lives on an "acreage" near a small town South
of Edmonton. We brought our young 7 year old grandson back to
Edmonton from Arizona and enjoyed this so much. He doesn't have
snow in Arizona so we took him sleigh riding and quadding, (a four
wheel recreational 'motor cycle' that runs in the snow) and went to a
show at the Imax theatre in the science center. The screen at this
theatre is 50 feet by 30 feet and is 3 dimensional. We saw the production
"whales" - In these shows one feels as though they are travelling by
plane or helicopter. It is a very thrilling experience.
Also, the City of Edmonton set up a tremendously big show in one of the
Edmonton parks for 6 weeks in December til on into January. They build
wire structures and use lots of lights and the end result is beautiful
displays of scenes from children's story books, fantasy figures and
hundreds of lovely trees dressed with lights and finery.
It is truly a wonderland and takes about 30 minutes to drive through
and see it all. So one evening we took our grandson to see this.
Something I really want to share with you is that last year myself and
my sister flew to China, to Xiamen and then by taxi to Quanzhou City
where we lived with a dear Malaysian lady for two months. We had the
great pleasure of meeting with the English Class students at one of the
colleges in Quanzhou twice a week.
(Neither myself nor my sister are school teachers ?I was a legal
secretary and my sister a health care worker.)
We began each class by sharing about ourselves, our families and homes and
then began discussing topics such as friendship, family, unity, universal
education, equality of men and women and the meaning of true happiness.
When the students asked why we had come to China we each told them in our
own way that we believe that now is the time or us all to work together
to make this world a better place, one in which there is no poverty, where there is opportunity for everyone and where there is justice for everybody. We said
said that we had come to make friends and to help however we could because
we believe with our whole hearts that we can all live in peace and happiness.
Other students from the school who did not attend the English classes
were invited to the home we were staying at because they wanted to
participate too. Everyone we met were so kind and loving to us and
we made many wonderful friends. During that time we visited Hong
Kong for five days and stayed in Xiamen for 3 days on our return
home. Our "home" in Quanzhou was a hub of activity and I miss
everyone so much. I am corresponding with 5 of the dear students and I
really love to hear from them. I hope that some day I can return to China .
It makes me feel so happy when I think of the dear people I met there.
I really look forward to sharing with you and getting to know you all.
Kindest regards, Sonia
