Mazatlan #8 and the second gold ring
A young lady took us to a nice private table right by the wall and the ocean was just across a few feet of sand. The surf was whie. There was a tall table heater and it kept my back warm. Ben arranged all for the best as we went along. I have witten about this before and I hope I'm not repeating myself. The headwaiter came, and we ordered. I had fish, and also chose from the beautiful long salad bar the rest of my meal. Ben ordered a full seafood plate with shrimp, squid, octopus, and various other kinds of fish. His vegetables came with the meal so he didn't go to the salad bar, but he made sure to arrange that his frogs legs be exchanged for a piece of fish. They offered ice cream for dessert and we both chose coconut. In the land of growing coconut palms, with some almost overhead it was, of course, delicious with a coconut sauce. I ordered a "virgin" pina colada and Ben the same. This was all a gift dinner fromDr. Stauers of the Kelowna College of Counsellors, who is one of Ben's clients. Then the Maitare d'hote brought a pretty plate with a bouquet of five large hibiscus flowers tied with twine that almost covered the litatle white box they hid . For me. I was astonished!
Inside the white box was a black jewellery box and within reposed a gold wedding ring so now I have two wedding rings on the fourth finger of my left hand. That is the traditional finger on which we wear wedding rings in Canada and the USA . In Europe they wear wedding rings on the fourth finger of the right hand. Here some people wear family wedding rings on that finger but the fourth on the left hand was anciently supposed to have a vein that ran directly to the heart. That is why our wedding rings are worn there.
Inside my new ring was inscribed from Ben with the date. In my journal I wrote "Blessed 50 years. Thanks to God we have been Baha'is for fifty years, too. Guidance for life and brings blessings with it."
The headwaiter came and was very moved by the whole event so that he gave Ben and I each a big hug of congratulations. I think he was thinking of his own marriage and hoping for the same one day. He said he would be with his family at the Fiesta the following night but we didn't see them there in the great crowd.
Ben specially thanked the young woman who had ushered us to a table which so well situated and private, and we walked home.
An old and tattered man with a beautiful face and radiant eyes very quietly asked me for a little money as we made our way along over the rough pavement. I would have given him some but I had none at all with me. He quietly and very gently said that it was OK. I have much regretted that I had nothing for him, and Ben doesn't hear very well as he's deaf in his left ear, so he didn't even notice the man. For the next two or three nights we watched for him, but he wasn't to be seen....
