Mazatlan #9 Deaths and a cock fight
We went home and were asleep by 11 pm.
In the afternoon of Saturday the 13th Ben went to look for a big department store named "Gigantes." He didn't get off at the right bus stop and ended up travelling all through the Colonias and on into the distant hills and around the entire bus route until it returned to the city and stopped at Plaza Ley del Mar where he was able to find the music disk of Los Tigres del Norte he set out to buy at Gigantes. It's for our son-in-law Jerson, who is a musician and originally from El Salvador in Central America. Ben also stocked our pantry with some purchases including cabbage, carrots, apples, and avocados. He brought a wonderful peach juice drink called Jugo de Valle de Durazno (Peach Nectar.) It is WONDERFUL! Real peach juice. I am beginning to feel hungry for it again as I write.
In my notes I wrote "We just saw seven pelicano fly by across in front of the shore. We are seated in the hotel restaurant as I write, and after lunch intend a walk on the beach at the firm edge where water and sand meet. Today is Monday. But not quitae yet....)
Back to Saturday: Ben made some observations based on his lengthy bus trip: he saw confirmation of the statement that 50% of the people exist well below the poverty line.
In the evening we walked to The Playa Mazatlan again for the Fiesta Mexicana. The food was buffet style, and pretty good. Ben brought a plateful for me as well as himself. We shared a table with fellow-Canadians from Saskatoon, two grown daughters with their parents. Dinner was a nice mixed Mexican plate and Ben had Carne Asada. I liked a traditional filling wrapped in corn leaves and roasted.
When the acting and dancing began Ben hated the Aztec pre-Columbian ceremony dance opening the show. The costumes were brilliantly coloured feathered headdresses on two "priests" who sacrificed a white dressed maiden to the gods. The acting dance was excellent but the sacrifice appeared far too real, and when an iron -helmeted and breast-plated Conquistador suddenly rose up from somewhere and knocked the priests down Ben said he felt like cheering.
Later he also hated a short but real live cock-fight that occurred during a dance. He actually booed! That took guts. Nobody else booed, but the cocksare fierce and full of hatred for each other, and ready to claw each other'seyes out and tear each other apart. Another ugly part of Mexican culture, likethe bull-fight. We never go to bull-fights. It is so unfair to the bull!
The dances were good. We have seen this kind of event two or three times before and, like movies that are now much more violent than they used to be, the sections Ben hated had been added to sauce it up, but it was more beautiful before. Costumes this time were sometimes more coarse and a bit too gaudy with many sequins. This Fiesta was not as innocent as they were before, with its episodes of crotch clutches and titty jiggles. Ben doesn't want to go again. He says "They can salt and pickle it!" I didn't feel as strongly as he did, butall the same I agree.
He was particularly angry to have had to wait in line for 1/2 hour with tickents in hand, and then need to scramble for decent seats. We had pretty good ones because we hurried to a far side. The show ran from 7 - 9:45.
We walked back to our hotel, enjoyed looking at the night ocean for awhile and then went to bed. While we were still relaxing and not yet asleep our daughter, phoned from Canada with news that one of our friends had been instantly killed in a head on crash on black ice near our home. Her husband, also a good friend had six ribs broken in the front and six in the back and one had penetrated his lung. He was in extremely poor condition in intensive care and might not live. A passenger in a the other car was also killed. Karen thought we would want to know so that we could pray for them. We are a close community and she was right.
From then on whenever anybody at all complained about the unusually cold weather I either thought or said "At least we don't have to contend with black ice!" AndI knew what I meant.
