Claude Monet, etc
Claude Monet, etc
Whilst Vincent Van Gogh said if he drew sunshine he would like that people would be able to touch it, Claude Monet said that “I would like to paint as a bird sings.” Through his lifelong paints, landscape had been Monet’s favorite motif, let it be the gardens of his own, poplars near his residence, or the thawing street in the winter, the roaring sea in the cold and gust. Surely not to mention the man-made Japanese-styled bridge and lilies around his later-life residence. Among the traceable paintings of Monet, I should like the poplar series the best . I like the space the painter created by his strong unhesitant strokes and his implementation of daring colors. By drawing the same subject from different angles, at different time, Monet managed to create different mood and impressions of those lofty upright poplars. In the Poplars, Sunset ( Peupliers, coucher de soleil) his almost characteristic dots and dashes become complementary, instead of distracting towards the effect he attempted to achieve.
But surely as many who are obsessed with his lilies series, I am strongly attached to some of his lilies paintings. Water Lilies, 1904; Water Lilies, 1914;and Water Lilies, 1924 were all good examples to see what Monet proceeded in the water lilies world. Here on the water surface one oftentimes couldn’t tell what are real and what are only reflections. But why does it matter? “My only virtue is to submit to instinct; it has been by rediscovering intuitive and secret forces and allowing them to predominate that I have been able to identify with Creation and give myself up to it…I have arrived at the final degree of abstraction and imagination allied to reality…”
Lastly, it is interesting to note that Vincent Van Gogh acknowledged the influence Monet’s paintings ( Boats in Winter Quarter, Etretat, 1885; Beach at Etretat ,1883;Sunflowers,1880 to name a few)fell on him. And then Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin (my favorite painter) had been close friends at one time. If I have to rank painters in my preference, Paul Gaugin, Van Gogh, and Claude Monet should certainly claim the top three vacancies.
P.S: I shall attach some of the paintings I mentioned in the article. However, Water Lilies, 1924 ( Le Bassin aux nympheas, le soir) is not available online. Additionally, I found the color effect of some chosen works was far from satisfying. I already tried my best though.
