New Streams of Life (15)

Today I had a fantastic dinner. Not as much the way it was cooked as the ingredients that were used. In the afternoon whilst walking along the dry beach nearby,
my friend and I picked handfuls of fresh sea beet and then fired it home, served as side dish of veg risotto. The see beet, after been quickly fried in olive oil, had a rich taste of the combination of cabbage and spinach; and its texture
was very similar to sea weed. And the risotto, comprised of leek, green pepper,
yellow pepper, mushroom, and organic peanuts, was rich both in taste and smell.
The peanut, rich in protein, gave the meal a fantastic touch especially.

I was so glad that my friend is so much more adventurous than his mother in light of food. You know sometimes even just a bit variety of food could give life a
bit extra pleasure and merriness. By time I think I had gradually settled down
in this part of the country. I started to go shopping with my friend’s mother,
started to work in the garden, started to be in charge of the mowing work, and started to be able to tell assuredly what I like and don’t like about food, scenery, and the types of people I meet every day.

It is certainly a good feeling. All this means that, succinctly speaking,I don’
t need to accept things I don’t like, and finally am able to be the way I am. I
don’t know how other people would like this place, but for me this mall town in the North West part of England certainly created for me the happiest time in my life. In spring especially. Walking alone, let it be by the beach, in the
woods, or by the river, offered me plenty of opportunities to explore the season
and the nature itself.

On the way of digging up ash trees, I got to know the shapes and personalities
of nettle, ivy, oak tree, let alone various wild flowers such as daisy, violet,
thistle, buttercup, and surely dandelion. It is often a mystery for me to see how these wide plants can grow so fast and are so wide spread under such little
notice. Every single time, walking into the same field I would always be able to see something different and new. It was as if the grassland were a piece of magical cloth and the nature an industrious painter; every time you approached it
you could notice the marvelous difference.

I have to admit that the time I spend here has gradually eased off my memory of
China. But I think that’s the forceful aspect of environment, especially if it
is for better. I take granted everything that is available in my life now, things such as fresh air, quiet environment, and certainly the approachable walking field behind the house. I forgot how I once had to put up with air and noise pollution near my rented house, and how I had to travel far to get some transient still moment. But then why should I? Shouldn’t these things be normal and essential for anybody anyway?

I told my friend that in my childhood I once had a similar environment. My parents had several pieces of land, my family house was surrounded by a quiet river and lots of trees such as poplar, elm, and parasoltree, and I didn’t need to put
up with the hustle of life. A few miles on my father’s bicycle, I would be back to my family house, dropping the stinky town behind. But how about these days?
It seems everything that was nice and existed in the past has gone with the economy development of the country. If there are still some nice places to visit today, don’t worry, I believe they will be well screwed up soon.

At this moment I am sitting here and writing this article, I don’t know if I sounded whiny. If I did, that was certainly not my intension. I am already done
with the past. Perhaps I just want to justify myself and my situation. In the recent past lots of people told me that I have a wonderful life here. But you know
to be able to walk at the beach without been elbowed away and to be able to think and talk as one wishes shouldn’t be a luxury. There must be something wrong
otherwise.
