Marion Molteno, etc

I like Marion Molteno’s book, If You can Walk You can Dance, more for the running thoughts of Jeannie, the protagonist, than the story itself. Her life principle is always trying to live as a whole human being, and you should never let anyone stop your responding fully to the people and situation around you. When Jeannie lied on bed with Neil, a liberal musician and a man she loved always, she said that how she was always strongly attached to those who have always a serious
involvement attitude towards life. Upon that I am strongly attached to her.

I don’t know what caused the phenomenon, but oftentimes I hear people say they
are getting old when they are only but thirty or forty years old. They signed how life rolled on and how swiftly time flashed away. Well, when I say “people”
, I actually specifically mean people from my country, China. Even in my family
my parents always think my sister and I are getting too old not to settle down and have a baby. Then earlier on I just read a post in which one whined (seriously she is whining) about how she looked at the mirror and then found distressfully how she looked old and withered, though she is at most in her forties. I don’
t know what all this is about.

My friend’s grandmother will be eighty years old next year. Still, every day she goes swimming, drives to her dance club, goes to the theatre regularly, and enjoys her shopping at high street. Every time I meet her I couldn’t help been surprised you know. She always knows how to make herself look fantastic. She lives
alone in her apartment, but every time I want to visit her, there is no trace of loneliness in the house. Instead, she and her lovely garden would already brighten me up.

I think that’s why I like this book of Marion Molteno. In this created world of
hers, Jeannie never stops following her yearning heart, and always remembers to
look back to think of future. There were people keeping coming into and vanishing from her life and life constantly rolled on, but she never stopped and let life itself drift her away. I like her spirit of striving to be in charge all the
time. It shows a quality of life, a serious attitude of involvement, that in my
opinion one should always strive to achieve.

Another reason I will remember this novel is a bit personal. It is related to Jeannie’s feelings towards her family who lived away from her. “A letter from Mom, one of her long, satisfying catalogues of detail; but she ends with, ‘Dad gets tired easily these days,’ and I don’t want to hear. Their role is to stay the same, to be the secure base that I do not yet have here…” Her wishing thought echoes with mine, which anyone knows impossible in reality.

But then “So why did I land myself here, in a place where I knew no one, where
once again a life has to be constructed from scratch? ‘You can’t go back where
you came from,’ Paula (Jeannie’s friend) said, years ago, ‘so why go somewhere else?’ It’s nearer, that’s why.” I think, one can relate, more or less,
these reflective conversation and contemplation, to one’s own life. By remembering and asking like Jeannie, you would find that every day life isn’t so slow moving as you thought, and life is passing so quickly that you would have little
time to think how old you are. Instead, you will have more chance to listen to and follow your inner crave, the one which should eventually help you find who you are and where you want to be...
