New Costume for Doctors and Nurses
New Costume for Doctors and Nurses
People tend to be forgetful -- soon after the SARS crisis during which medical workers are praised to the skies for their selflessness and fearlessness by the national leaders and the public, hospitals and their employees have unfortunatelly, again, become the target of a new wave of public criticism, with the domestic media unfailingly revealing the "dark side" of what people used to call the Angel in White.
I'm not complaining though. Having been in this field for more than 15 years, I, weirdly, take no pride in this history of being a medical worker. The unmentionalbe salary isn't the only reason of course. Having witnessed how this drifting clinic has been struggling for survival, and having put an ear on the ground for all these years, I am well aware where things have gone wrong. Tensions, disputes and even physical voilence between the two parties are no longer newsworthy, still, the recent stories about doctors and nurses in some hospitals receiving patients with helmet on head and nightstick around the waist are a real eye -opener.

Look at the attached two pictures. They are nurses going to work and at work. And it's no military drill or anti-terrorism dry run. If the sight of a nurse nursing a new-born baby with a military helmet on her head rather than her nurse hat, is fun, it is indeed so. But not after you learn it's no Kuso or spoof from any avant-garde cartoonist and it's indeed a new wide-spread trend among medical workers, and they are not wearing these for fun, but for self-defense. Sadly funny as it may be, it is real that this endangered group are being given self-defense trainings as well as lessons on how to talk to whom they serve in a tactful, roundabout way just as a politician. Even Ministry of Health officials have given warnings!
That may not be really that bad, though. Before long, medical workers would become the best candidates for army, police and politicians recuitments. This would save this country time and money, anyway.
I guess my colleagues and I can look forward to our new costume before this nightfall.
Panpanpan.
