Uncle Ben has Tomato Plants, Too!
Dear Sonnet
Thanks for the tomato story and pictures. Last year was my first year after a long pause to grow tomotoes. A friend gave me some plants and I planted them.
I have an Italian Neighbour who is a phenominal gardener, his plot, which is about a quarter acre is absolutely filled with vegetables like beans, peppers, corn ,tomatoes, lettuce of several kinds and grapes. In short he has a "Green Thumb" that means everything he plants turn out well. Last year he came over several times and gave me hints on watering, fertilizing and such. This resulted in a very good crop. This year he knew how little time I have in the spring. So he came one morning while I was at work. He prepared the ground and in the evening he came back with eight tomatoe plants in gallon pots, which were already a little higher that the plants in your picture. He planted them and gave me instruction on their care. He also comes back now and then to check, that I follow his directions. My plants are already bigger and have some blossoms, so there will be some early tomatos . The plants will grow in the next 6 weeks to about five feet tall, with many blossoms. The tomatoes will get bigger and then red. They are usually ready from late August through to end of September. This is my tomatoe story. It would not have been possible without the help of Alex my friendly Neighbour. What a wonderful world it would be, if everyone had a good Neighbour like this. Just think of it, family to family, city to city, and finally country to country. When compared to the turmoil just now in Gaza I would hope, they would grow tomotoes too.. Thank you Sonnet for your story and best wishes, Uncle Ben
