My Trip to London

It is hard for me to describe the impression London left to me during this seven
-day camping trip. On the one hand, it is such a famous city that I often felt unreal whilst I was there. But on the other hand, I have to say it is the most interesting city I have ever visited.

It is a city complied with old and new, home and foreign. At one time I passed weathered Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral; at another I saw places such
as London Eye, a renowned modern London sky line. But believe it or not, those
aforementioned places were not my interest in London. Neither did I go to visit
them just for the visiting sake. Instead, I had my own preference among the things that London could offer.

For example, paintings. It was the first time I had seen paintings by reputable
painters such as Monet, Seurat, Pissarro, Cezanne, Picasso, Gauguin and Van Gogh
. The impression of them was the most valuable part of this trip for me. Some of
them were so absorbing that I wish I could just stand there in the gallery forever. Just like John Keats said to his Fanny: “I almost wish we were butterflies
and liv’d but three summer days—three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.” How I wish there would
be more companionship of these great painters than mundane and trying bits in my
life.

Garden was the second aspect that I enjoyed about London, be it Kew Garden or just the small wildlife garden adjoining to the Natural and History Museum. In thewildlife garden, though small, there were plenty to discover and enjoy. The garden was created as the Museum’s first living exhibition and it shows the potential for wildlife conservation in the inner city. Given the fact that today 50%
of people in the world actually live in city and will have increased to 70% by
2050 (these figures were from Global Cities exhibition in Tate Modern Museum), the garden project in my opinion is certainly of important significance.

Another aspect about London that I love was the music at underground sections. Though London underground, famous as it is, was itself unbearably stuffy and peopled most of the time, I enjoyed the music played by those underground artists, those at South Kensignton Station especially. The sensation brought by those artists was unforgettable. The murky underground alley and the dump feeling brought
by the continuous rain were often brightened and vanished thanks to their beautiful music.

Another place I should mention is Greenwich. It is best known for its maritime history and as the location of Greenwich Mean Time. But even sparing from those aspects, it is a place worthing a visit anyway in my opinion. The building itself
was an attraction. It was in the twilight when I arrived at the Greenwich Park.
The quiet atmosphere with its historical-looking architecture, in which I could
almost smell the history in the air, was memorable.

The last aspect I would like to mention is the camping itself. It was an enjoyable experience overall, despite the fact that it rained a lot during the last week. Sometimes I was wakened up by the early birds, but that was far from annoying. When we breakfasted on the meadow, ravens and squirrels would meander around
us hungrily. So we had to be careful not to leave any food in the tent. Having said that, one day I did somehow managed to forget to take my sandwiches with me.
When I came back in the evening, there was nothing but an empty bag lying outside of my tent. But despite those ravenous intruders, the camping itself was very pleasant. It often helps you get away from your usual self and house, helping
slacken your nerves and refreshing you with the bliss of nature.

P.S: This is only but a brief record of my experience in London. But I think everyone, if the chance is allowed, should go to visit London (definitely not
residing there though) at least once in one’s life time, for only you can identify, by being there, the aspects of it that are unique and interesting to you.
