A Review on The Devil Wears Prada

Having watched such large amounts of Hollywood movies, I have developed my own
criteria for good movies and bad. Among them is a very simple one: Good movies hold me tight throughout the story while I have to take great pains to finish
watching a bad movie. Hollywood never fails to produce eye-opening movies, of course, but sometimes I just have difficulty sitting out some of the latest blockbusters, some of which being even box office hits.

I was only hoping to relax for a while before going to bed when I aimlessly looked at the newly downloaded movie The Devil Wears Prada. “Yet another ugly duckling story or some rags-to-riches tale,” I assumed, after reading the movie introduction.
I was right in one sense and in another, wrong.
The movie tells a story where a young lady, initially looking forward to becoming a journalist, accidentally succeeds in finding a job as a secondary assistant to a hit fashion magazine’s top manager. The job, though allegedly a hot
position among young girls who are dying to make their ways to the fashion world
, is no bed of roses. A real tycoon and workaholic in the fashion circles, the
manager is actually an overbearing, haughty, and picky woman who enjoys bossing
around the office and assigning “missions impossible” to those under her. So
few people can survive the tough job that the merciless manager just has to keep
firing and hiring; and surprisingly, though not having impressed the fastidious
employer much at the interview, our heroine manages to stay on the ball and, by
being a quick learner and by her tenacious personality, slowly begins standing
on her own feet at the job. Smart as our heroine is, she has a bad time juggling her promising new job with her private life, which begins acting up against her. The predicament finally got her in hot water: She has become the manager’s
fair-haired girl and the future never seemed brighter, yet her complete devotion to the new role puts her relationship with her boyfriend on the rock, seeming
poised to break up.

I was held in suspense then, curious about which way she might choose to proceed. She is intelligent and seems like an aspiring person, but she is also in
deep love with her boyfriend, a chef who doesn't think much of the fashion world. The movie ends up in my favor: Having seen too much of the other side of the fashion circles, and having finally realized her own self, the girl quits the
job and gets back to her original dream. And this decision to stick to being
herself finally wins back her boyfriend.

I didn’t expect much of this movie in the first place, but it turned out a sweet surprise which made me sit out the whole time, against all this sweltering summer night. The story is full of relaxing music and the performance is a bit exaggerated, but is just fine. Nowhere is it near any blood-and-thunder stories,
but a blood-and-thunder won’t help ease you up during this toasting weather.
The Devil Wears Prada is not like a thrilling horror such as The Hills Have Eyes
2 either; it’s more like a cool drink, meant to hit the spot for a while in this scorching season.
