Summer Walks, etc

It’s been a while, until this morning, that I had opportunity to go out for
a walk again because of the changeable weather. But the sun finally came out again. I was wakened up by my friend early in the morning, who was excited about the long-delayed walk. The idea of getting cattails for his water pond in the garden had been back on his mind ages. But finally the weather made the trip feasible.

My friend’s mother dropped us at Tideford, where the cattail was likely
located, which was around eight miles away from home. Before getting off the car
, my friend warned me of the possibility of a long walk today. But you know I didn’t mind it at all. The breezy air was really comforting. Apart from that, I had my camera with me. There should be plenty of scenes to enjoy and remember.

We chose foot paths most of the time in order to dodge the main roads which were
full of traffic during weekends. Because cattail prefers boggy areas and sunshine, we also tried to follow rivers, streams or even ditches. The weather was extremely fine. The birds were chirping along the woods. And the dapple shadows and
breezy woods were pleasing to both our eyes and ears.

For me getting cattails was only one of the reasons that I came along with my friend. I fancied the walk also for the surprises you are almost certain to encounter during the trips like this. The waving elderflowers along the small paths, the acres of hard and soft wheat fields on people’s farm, the crowing sound of
roosters at the lovely river cottage by the wood, and the stunning skyline viewing from the high slopes. All this fascinated me and made my heart long for a walk whenever possible.

The thing is you can never get tired of walking in the wood or fields, in the summer season especially. Every time you come out you are bound to see some new things. For example, now it’s the season for black berries. You can walk in the field in a meandering manner. Then when getting tired or thirsty, you can stop at
blackberries bushes, which were literally everywhere, and pick and devour the sweet fruit to your heart’s content. I don’t think I will ever get tired of the
taste. It’s so sweet and so mellow. But of course, like other fruits, to enjoy them you have to pick the ripe ones.

Talking about this walk, my friend didn’t get the cattail in the end. The ones
we saw were not accessible at the moment. But instead of cattails, we got a few
grape vines. I told my friend once that in my imagination every garden should have grape vines, and in summer you could sit under the shade of those vines while enjoying the fruit of them. And now we have them! Though we have missed the best time to grow plants and vegetables, it’s still not too late. The other day
we got a few lettuce and spinach beet seeds as well. Not they are safely dormant
in the soil. Hopefully we will expect a few shoots coming out from the soil early next week.

I don’t know what other people think . But for me the change of the seasons always makes me excited and full of wandering thoughts. Summer especially. The feeling of seeing your own plants grow in the garden is so satisfying and encouraging. And I think the scampering chickens in the garden must share the same feeling with me. Now they become early birds as days move on. Every morning they come
out early, scampering around in the garden. They lay eggs diligently and they
sing merrily for the namesake afterwards. I just hope overall the weather will
change for better. Because now coming back, though exhausted, I anticipate another pleasing walk again soon.
