Romance in Life!

On Chinese Valentine Day, I made a surprise homerun and threw a surprise dinner
party at home. Who said middle aged men do not know romance! Of course, my wife
was touched and a bit appreciative for my little trick.

After the dinner, we sat at a small round table in our balcony with a cup of nice tea in our hands and began to chat randomly. Inevitably, we touched the topic
of romance. Suddenly, as the idea coming from nowhere, my wife suggested that we
both should write down 10 romances in our close to 13 years of marriage to see
how much they match. I thought that was an interesting idea and immediately agreed to do it. After half an hour of searching for memories, we had our job done.
When we compared our lists, to my great surprise, only one out of ten on our lists matches. All I listed are big events, rosy moments and happy surprises. On the contrary, what my wife had put down are what I consider small and insignificant things such as the note I put on our refrigerator saying “I will miss you, girls ( meaning my wife and my daughter)” when I leave home for my business trips
…. After a quite-a-while discussion, I came to realize that, in my wife’s mind
, a rose garden is not necessarily more attractive than a rose; a rose not necessarily more romantic than a hug in need.

Romance takes many forms. But in our opinion, neither forms nor contents matter.
It is the true and sincere feeling you put into romance that counts more than
anything else. A romance should not only say “look, how imaginative and creative my idea is “ but also “ how much I care .”

No matter how divergent our lists look, there is one romance we share in common.
That is we both listed on the very top of our lists the dancing in a semi-dark
room in Shenzhen during first 6 months of our marriage . Those months were among
the most difficult period of my life. We just got married in a city far away from home. We practically had nothing and we had to start from scratch. My wife just got a so-so job. I had just lost my job. We rent a 10-squre-meter room. Both
my wife and I were fond of dancing. But we could not afford to go to any dancing
club. So, after dinner, we just danced in our little room with light turned off
.Through our shabby window shed some moonlight, with beautiful English music in
the background, we danced, hugged and kissed…. Looking back, I feel that was the most beautifully romantic moment in my life! To this date, I strongly believe,
as long as two truly love each other, difficulties of any sort can make two hearts grow fonder!

“ Do you care for a dance , Sir?” my wife’s soft voice pulled me away from this deep memory. “With all my heart!” I said cheerfully. We just danced as we used to 12 years ago, but in a much spacious house… In the end, I gave my wife a
real tight hug. Then, I said “will you put this hug on your list of romance?”
“Certainly, “ said my wife, “ but I have to take away your surprise dinner party today from the list to make room for this romantic hug.” She continued. We
both burst into a loud laughter.
