Dear Forum Friends

HP Sauce graced my table tonight.

Today was a sunny but not too hot day. It started with my car again refusing to
start, It upset my plans. I went back up to the house. We live on a hill and the
cars are parked at the bottom, where there is a private lane to the street. Aunt Mary greeted me at the door. Of course I was very upset and she calmed me down
. I would have to take her car, which she needed at noon to go to her Acupuncture treatment. When I went down to the cars again, I decided to give it one more
try. Persistence paid off and I got the Diesel car to run. White and black smoke
came out until it ran for a few minutes. The same thing had happened the day before. I therefore had purchased new Glow Plugs and had a mechanic install these.
I called my German mechanic who lives on a mountain about an hour from my house
and explained the details and what I had already done. He listened carefully and then said:?It seems that the special Glow Plug fuse is gone!?I asked if I could come up for him to help me. He said;?Gladly, but go to the parts supplier
and buy a new fuse.?I did this and had a nice drive up the mountain where he has his house and workshop.
He looked under the hood, and found the trouble as diagnosed. Not only did he change the burnt out fuse, he showed me how this is done. So next time I can help
myself. I have bought extra fuses.

I then bought a new Fax machine for the office and some paper. After helping an
old friend to the bank and another errand, I set up the new Fax machine in the office. The weather looked so inviting I decided to go swimming. I swim at the Grand Hotel, where I hold a membership in the Spa. The swim was delightful with some sunning afterwards. Now it had gotten too late to beat the traffic jam. Every
day between 4:45 and 5:45 there is a jam to enter the only bridge across the lake, with all traffic coming to a crawl and people trying to squeeze into your lane. Nerve racking. I therefore phone Mary and she suggested I should have some supper and the come home. I had not had a lunch only a nibble on a bun, so was glad to hear her suggest this. There is a nice pub with a large patio at the waterfront and it is here that I went. I found an empty table and sat down. Soon a pretty and efficient young waitress arrived and took my order. I chose a Steak Sandwich, with salad and garlic toast. For a steak it was reasonably priced and I felt the need for some meat. She brought knife and fork in a napkin and a glass of water. Next she put a bottle of HP Sauce on the table. I took the slice of lemon that set on the rim of the glass, and squeezed it with the fork, so that the
juice ran into the water, Then I added a small packet of sugar (They sit on the
table for coffee). This way I had a pleasant slightly flavored drink at no cost.
While I waited for my steak, I took the bottle and looked it over carefully. HP
Sauce comes in a square bottle, that I first saw in 1952 at my English Landlord
and Landlady抯 place, where I rented a room. Mr. Saunders was very proud of his
HP Sauce. He was a simple workman and had worked hard all his life in the American Can Company. He explained that this was House of Parliament sauce, and the Members of Parliament ate this sauce, but he too had a bottle on his table. HP Sauce is a condiment eaten with grilled beef, even Hamburger or Lamb Chops. It has
a tart and pungent taste. It reminds you of Indian food. Of course it would not
lend itself to Chinese dishes, or perhaps only as part of a marinade. HP Sauce
has a picture of the House Parliament with a Bridge and the river Thames on the
label. The bottle that graced my table had a new label in light blue with the picture as mentioned and a seal that said ?100 Years know all over the world? The
main ingredients are vinegar, molasses, dates, apple juice & tamarind.
Quite a concoction and you can give yourself airs. And so did I when I ate my excellent Steak and used some of that sauce. I felt like a Maharaja sitting on the
patio with a nice meal and a beautiful evening sunshine.
