The food and the sincerity
I will never forget the winter in 2003. Although it was very cold, I still went to my husband’s hometown with him. My husband had never returned there for a long time, so he was very eager to see his parents and old friends.
One nice day, we crossed a river by boat and went to see Jun, my husband’s good friend. I heard that Jun had a great talent for singing, playing instruments. And we were walking slowly along the quiet village alley when a handsome young man ran happily towards us. He was Jun!
Jun introduced his family members to us. And he took out chairs and socked us. We chatted for a long time. When we wanted to take our conge, he told us his family had got ready for the meal for us. My husband told me stealthily that there would be a big meal. So it was. There were more than fifteen dishes on a big round table. On the dishes there was fish, chicken, pork, beef and vegetables. After the meal, his younger brother’s wife brought us glasses of hot tea. After the tea, we were served hot water and new towels to wash face. It is not until the end of the time that I will forget the feeling of being surrounded by the luscious traditional atmosphere. That is everyone will give his guests the best things, including of the best food, to show his sincerity and amity.
I know this tradition very well for there is a similar tradition in my own hometown. Even in the crowded market, I can find this friendly attitude everywhere and every day. I am often proud of the meticulous service of the packmen selling sweet bean curd, one of the most popular local snacks in our city, my Nenoh Baby’ s favourite. We are often attracted by the packmen’s yo-heave-ho. And then we run quickly towards their tricycles. Although a bowl of sweet bean curd just costs 1 yuan, it is as precious as pearls in the packmen’s eyes. They always open the utensils very carefully and by easy stages, and then fill the bean curd with some sugar and some delicious powders of fried peanuts and sesames. Every time I get the bowl of the sweet bean curd, I find that the sincerity makes these simple men as venerable as the king.
