Daily Anecdotes

The first sign of autumn tiptoed in on the steamed windowpanes in the morning. Faded flower petals and withered leaves lied on the narrow paths in the fields, on the grass around our garden patio, and on my way to our neighbor’s garden. Why would I go and visit our neighbor’s garden you may wonder? Well, because the
chickens had escaped!

It happened in an afternoon when I was learning French at my laptop upstairs and
my friend and her mother chopping wood at the other side of the graveyard gate.
Our neighbor came to knock on our door and complained our two chickens were puttering and pecking their flowers and plants in their front garden. Startled, I quickly put on my saddles and a box of corn and run to their garden. There they were. Upon seeing me, they stopped temporarily pecking plants and tried to dodge
me by hiding themselves in the bush.

It took my neighbor and me around a quarter to catch them in our arm. But that was not the end of the story. Upon going back, I found that a chicken was still missing. I ran to my friend and her mother for help. But after hours’ futile search, we had to give up, thinking that the chicken must be lost forever. But just
at that time the family who lived at the end of the road brought back the chicken. Apparently she had rambled away too far and got lost. The family saw her stand in the middle of the road looking pathetic and hopeless.

Later we found the reason of their escaping. Apparently the ginger colored cat came back again. Those chickens were so scared and flew from the fence, ran to our front lawn, pecked all the lettuce and spinach leaves, and rambled away. Now my friend and I have to trim their wings to prevent their future escape. But if you think they lack fun in the garden then you are indeed mistaken.

I was in my room yesterday when my friend called me to our study window. Down on
the lawn a chicken was biting something tightly in her mouth, with others chasing after her and attempting to have a share of “the thing”. It turned out it was a frog in the chicken’s mouth. Yuck! After seeing them eat snow warms, slugs
, and now frogs, I wonder what they won’t eat.

Now enough chickens. I met the nice French girl again last night, with whom I have been doing language swap. I should say she is really a nice girl and I like her a lot. But there is only one thing about her that kind of does my head in. She is such a talkative girl. Most of time when we sat in the conservatory, she talked and she talked. I got so dizzy when we finished our language swap session
yesterday that when she was about to live, instead of saying “Goodbye” or “Have a nice evening”, I suddenly blurted out “Good evening, S !”How embarrassing.

The funny thing is English is neither of our mother language. So occasionally both of us understood what each other meant but the expression just slipped our mind. It ended up I had to flip through the dictionary to get the meaning cross.
It was quite fun. For example, in French “le balai” means broom in English. In
our French session she tried to tell me what “le balai” meant in English. She
kept gesticulating (She used both her feet and hands in an attempt to rub the floor) and saying “It’s a thing that…,” I laughed my head off while
resorting to my dictionary for help. In the end she said:” well, at least I made your laugh….that's good.” But how could I stop laughing. She is such a funny girl. Funny and very nice.

I have been learning French by myself four or five months now. I was going to take a French class in the local college to help me with my speaking and listening
ability and I did. But the day before yesterday I got a phone call from the college, saying I can’t join the class unless I am a British citizen or I have been staying in UK more than three years. I was shocked, disappointed when I hanged
up the phone. I was also angry. It seemed that one’s situations could never be
the worst. One disappointment would almost definitely follow another. But anyway, I don’t want to give up yet. If things come to the worst, I will just try
to deal with them until I fulfil my purpose.
