True story, animals CAN communicate with each other!
I was walking over the desert yesterday morning. It was a clear, sunny but cold day. Suddenly I heard strange bird calls from on high. Looking up I could see far above me 5 very big flying birds. They were long necked with legs about the same length as their necks. They were too high to make out colours. I had not heard that kind of cry before, not at all like ducks or honking geese. I think they were some kind of crane. One flew alongside but apart from the others. The others were in a bit of a formation. They has just begun continuously calling to each other and there had been complete silence before that. Then, as a group of 4 with the single one separated but still joining them, they began to fly in clockwise circles. They continuosly called out, talking to each other, as they circled about 4 times. Then the lone bird began flying directly away from the others, in silence, heading due south towards the pass through which the biggest local river, the Kuitun River, flows out of the mountains. The other 4, back into a line-formation, silently changed course and flew directly west and out of sight, following the edge of the line of mountains to the immediate south of us.
This is what I surmise: The birds are migrating south to India, etc. They were together in formation and flying quietly until they spotted the great mountain chain. These mountains are snow-capped year round so they are quite a barrier I would think. They then began discussing their route. One decided to go for the pass and the others decided to follow the edge of the range in a westerly direction, hoping to find a better pass over the barrier. They discussed it, made their decisions and went their separate ways.
