Christmas Time
--Far from the Maddening Crowd

Christmas is a tiring period of the year as far as I am concerned. Back to the beginning of December people that I know and meet start to enter into the Christmas mood, and whenever you go the subject is brought up and raved upon. Some people get excited; some people get stressed; and some people get excited and stressed at the same time.

In this household my friend’s father only cares to get himself stoned at the end of the day, the stress for the festival built up upon my friend’s mother that
they ended up a meaningless fight the other day. For me I simply don’t understand why. I told my friend that this year I would try my best to buy presents to
please everyone, but there is no way that I can do it another year. I simply hate this way of celebrating the festival: everyone buys stuff for the buying sake,
and celebrates it for the celebrating sake. I don’t see there is any point of
doing all this, unless there is something that I miss out.

Gladly upon the approaching of Christmas everyone seems to cool down gradually.
Instead of shopping like a maniac, people start to sit by the wooden stove calmly reading a book or chatting with their visiting friends. Then on TV aside from
commercial advertisement classics movies and dramas are on to add some meaning to this festival break. Dramas such as Vanity Fair, An Old Curiosity Shop, Oliver
Twist and the household A Christmas carol remind people those forgotten time and writers and arouse their curiosity to that memorable period again.

If I have to choose one period of Christmas time to like I will definitely choose the one or two days before Christmas and Boxing Day. By this time people ceased to slip in their Christmas card to your door, which always means you have to write and slip in your Christmas card back to their door in order to avoid the reputation of being uncivil. You finally can sit down and relax. If you care to read in your room, you may as by this time you have finished phoning other people
out of civility and vice versa. You may sit at your room as long as you like, and forget all about the maddening festival. You finally are yourself again. Isn’
t that wonderful?

Sometimes I do think lots of people shop and buy things they don’t need only because they are bored. They are so bored that they have to find something to kill
time, something that can distract their attention and take their disposable income. They can’t stand boredom or the time of being alone. For all the sakes above shopping becomes an excuse. It allows one to be engaged in some activity that
can fill one’s time gap but doesn’t require any thinking. But I wonder what all this will lead to, more boredom, more maddening shopping, more quarreling, and more loneliness and emptiness? What a grotesque world this will become. I loathe to think about it.
