Pan Meets with David, 4 Dear, Sweet People
Pan Meets with David, 4 Dear, Sweet People
I soon learned that time in XinJiang was 2 hours later than that in the south part of China. Dawn came around 9:30 am here while in mine it was 7:30. So what a relief! I didn't fall out to another planet. The trip from Urumqi to Kuitun took nearly 3.5 hours, and I had a good conversation with the other passengers : A nice young man visiting home after four years serving the army, and other two locals. If it was not a good way of learning some local customs!
Surprisingly, my heart wasn't pounding as hard when it was about to meet David and Jane soon. On second thought, it wasn't that surprising though. We had known each other for more than seven years, and that was not a short piece of time anyway. We hugged each other, just like what old friends do on their reunions, then began our talk. It seems odd to me now, that I could hardly recall what we had talked about on our way back to Dushanzi in that taxi, not even what kind of a taxi we were in. Well, probably I was so excited I suffered from a transient memory loss? David looked just as I had expected, maybe a bit taller. Jane was a happy lark, and obviously she was made that way. Her fluent oral English amazed almost everybody around her, me included. After lunch David showed me their new classrooms and the room that was to be used for a bookstore.
Was it cold outside? Oh yes of course! But just not as bad as people had warned to me. And nobody seemed to carry a knife something around, or not that I could see? :P Walking under the sunshine was even a pleasant experience, especially when with David, who had been in Dushanzi for four years and had apparently fallen in love with it. For an English lover like I am, living with a native English speaker had always seemed like heaven to me, and David is my seven-year long fatherly friend -- what a dear person to be with. When in the house, it was just nice and warm. No sooner had we returned home than I felt like lying down and having a good sleep. It had been a sleepless night the night before, and I felt so relaxed now....
To be continued,
Panpanpan.
