Review of "No Country for Old Mem" ... a movie
"No Country for Old Men", a review.
I had to wait a day or so before considering writing a review of this film. It left me with a serious impression. I wanted to think of the reason I felt this way.
This is a film calculated to drive fear deep into the heart of the average American.
Hollywood does this for basic reasons, mostly having to do with the military/industrial complex; a very profitable industry, to say the least. Those who have fear look for protection.
A sheriff (elected policeman), actor Tommy Lee Jones, is about to retire after a life of fighting crime. He comes from a long line of law-keepers; father, grandfather, etc.
An intelligent but poor mid-western cowboy, actor Josh Brolin, while in the desert near the Mexican border, happens upon a "drug-deal gone bad"; bodies everywhere and a leather handbag full of money. Shall he keep the money? ... he tries to and this film demonstrates what might happen to an "innocent" person who interferes in the big-money drug business.
The elder policeman observes and comments.
But, that is not the problem I have with this film.
My recommendation is NOT to spend time watching this movie. Don't succumb or feed the wishes of those who try to generate fear within you.
This film is about innocence versus evil. Greed versus peace and safety.
The innocence of the average member of American society comes up against the world of immoral criminality. The naivety of the little rabbit confronted by the weasel? There is nothing like this in the animal world. A weasel is just hungry. Clearly, a regular American guy has no defense against a person, a corporation with its own immorality. This is blatantly thrown into our faces. This film teaches us that evil will easily steamroll over naivety, kindness to strangers, respect for the law and others. The law and law enforcement is helpless. It must be everyone for himself if one is to survive. And you cannot overcome the power of money.
The movie "ends"? No, it just "stops".
Evil continues to rule and old policemen retire. We are being told, this is "no country for old men"; times have changed, look after yourself by any means whatsoever. Get a gun and use it when you are threatened. Avoid the drug community although it is ubiquitous ... nothing can control or change their seeking after money. It is all about money and power. There is no hope ... fear reigns and expect to pay whatever it costs for "safety".
The American National Rifle Association probably underwrote this film's costs.
I wish to enjoy my life along with my fellow-man. I trust those who I find worthy. I have found many such friends in China. There is no fear in my heart.
