My Trip to Southampton, etc
My Trip to Southampton, etc
Have been feeling exhausted every day recently. Following our trip to North Coast of Cornwall, my friend and I had to head for Southampton for my interviews last Wednesday. It was stressful for my friend as he never drove to Southampton before; and it was stressful for me because I had to navigate all the way even though I had never been to Southampton before.
But gladly we got there just in time despite that our car broke down once on the way. Southampton is an interesting city. Located halfway between Cornwall and London it sort of has the tinge of characteristics of both. It is the combination of tranquility and vibrancy, of rural and metropolitan sceneries. Passing by the East Docks by the river, you could see hundreds of shipping containers lying on the dock. Despite what other people say, I didn’t think they looked dull at all.
Our original plan was on the second day after my interviews we would have a day trip in the New Forest based on the edge of Southampton. But our car broke down again just before we got onto the road, as a result my friend and I decided to head for home directly. Basically the car’s alternator failed and the battery wouldn’t charge, so every time we switched off the engine we had to jump start the car. It was rather never-racking.
But we had a bit fun in Bath and Bristol. Bath is famous for its reserved stonework. Both my friend and I were stunned upon the first glimpse of Bath. The grey stonework buildings of Bath gave the city an aged and reserved look. It was no less inspirational than Jane Austen’s time in my opinion. Being in the city you just couldn’t be trifled with anything but tuned in by the historical scenery. We had a brief tour along the South edge of the city and then headed North West towards Bristol.
Although on my last trip to Manchester we needed to transfer our train at Bristol, the city didn’t look very interesting to me. Bristol, though much bigger, has a similar hilly look to Plymouth, which is only twenty minutes drive from my place. I think that’s why I was more impressed with Somerset and Bath than Bristol and other Devon cities. Having driving and staying at hilly places such as Cornwall, this trip offered me a nice change.
Anyway the two-day trip to Southampton was much more tiring as we had expected. But gladly on the way back the weather was very pleasant and sunny. Around half the way back I got my agency’s phone call and was told I got a permanent offer . So things around will be very different soon and hopefully they are different for better as well.
