My Trip to Ashurt New Forest
My Trip to Ashurt New Forest
Ashurt New Forest is only but half an hour away from the place I live by train. So on a fine Sunday morning my friend and I set off for the most interesting-looking place on the map of Southampton. As greedy as ever, I pointed at the map and said to my friend that we should explore the whole forest.
But of course it was possible. The scale of the New Forest is quite similar to the Dartmoor in Cornwall, which basically means it takes one seven or eight days at least to explore the whole area. Anyway our train departed on 10:30 in the morning and half an hour later we were at Ashurt stop, which was in the middle of the forest.
The air was brisk at the edge of the forest, and the grassy ground was still frosty when we walked into the Southwest part of the Forest. Both of my friend and I were stunned at the scenery in front of our eyes. The open feeling created by the lofty pine trees and leafless tree branches was stunning and the air smelled of stacked logs on the both sides of our path, very woody and fresh.
From time to time there were two or three horse riders or cyclists passing us. We either exchanged hello with them or just stepped by to let them pass. Nature brought everything into harmony. No one felt intruded upon. Even the deer in the forest seemly friendly and accepted us as we were. At one point four deer ran past us and they were fifty meters at most. It was quite unusual.
My friend and I finished our expedition of the Northwest forest around one o’clock in the afternoon. Not satisfied we went back to Ashurt railway stop and started to explore towards the opposite direction. It turned out really good. Though only separated by the railway line, the North and South part of the forest had quite different looks.
There were mostly pine trees in the North part and somewhat it was very boggy in the forest if you didn’t follow the walking path. In contrast, the soil in the South part was flinty and soft. On an open grassy space, there were lots of traces of moles on the ground surface. And in the forest the surface was dry and covered with beech nuts. Instead of deer, my friend and I saw quite a few squirrels, munching away beech nuts in the sunshine.
I told my friend that I actually preferred the South part of the forest. It was quieter and there were almost no traces of people. After a busy week, my friend and I finally got the chance to hang out together. We talked about lots of things, our perspectives towards life, towards people and towards ourselves. There was a feeling of excitement and expectation stirring in the air. It was very nice . Around three thirty in the afternoon, we finished the second part of our expedition. The sun started to cool off and my friend and I decided to call it a day, event though there was still a lot to explore in the forest. For him, there is a tiring trip ahead of him on Monday, and for me a tiring week working in the new company. But believe it or not, I actually quite look forward to what will happen ahead of us. Everything won’t be perfect or easy, but everything that happens will surely become part of our experience, and later part of our success in life.
