Movie Review: 10,000 BC on Big Screen
Movies are meant to be enjoyed in the movie theater where huge screen and fancy acoustic system are available. Is it due to the outrageous ticket prices or is it for the reason of convenience? Hard to say, but more and more people are getting used to appreciating a movie or two on the computer screen on weekends. Personally, movies are the primary reason why I am having this 250GB hard drive and thinking about buying another.
The good news is they charge only half of the list price on Tuesdays. For 12. 5 Yuan, I tought it might be worth it for a newly released Hollywood blockbuster , 10,000 BC, which has hit the headline nationwide since it hit the big screen.
Only one third or maybe one fourth of the seat were taken. It's the afternoon of a work day anyway. Watching a movie together with a whole bunch of audience is a lot more fun than watching with only a few, let alone alone, but for half the original price, I guessed I wasn't in the position to complain.
I don't know whether it should be officially classified as a "mythological epic" or something, or it's just another piece of CGI-heavy Hollywood-made style-overtaking-substance junk like Harrypotter and TheRingoftheLord. CGI stands for " computer generated imagery". The storyline of 10,000 BC is simple and seems familiar: On the end of the earth there stands a super powerful empire which puts the rest of the world under its overbearing thumb, looting men and women of other tribes and making them slaves to the empire. Deeply in love with his childhood lover who falls victim to the latest raid from the empire, one man from a tribe which lives on woolly mammoth hunting stands up to fight the much-stronger enemy. He wins the support of all the slavery tribes, and with the help of some supernatural power, or superstitious magic, he succeeds in tearing down the empire and having his beloved girl back to his arm.
The scenery is spectacular and the sound system is incredibly convincing. For most of the time I marveled at how well they can "get something out of nothing" on the computer now. They created a couple of animals that only existed tens of thousands of years ago; they looked so vivid and graphic, you could have believed they were true. The mammoth-hunting sence is breath-taking, and with the uplifting music and plausible lifelike sound effect accompanying throughout the exhilerating fighting, you would feel as if you were the one that tried to escape the terrifying stampede of the herd. Another sight that would open your mouth is the debut of the empire and the pyramid contruction site. I am deeply impressed.
But then the story per se is mediocre. There's not much character development and you can hardly tell who is who for most of the movie watching experience. But can I expect any more of a mythological epic. It's, in my opinion, far better than the lengthy yet nonsensical RingofLord or Harrypotter stuff. One horrible flaw is the movie on the Chinese screen is dubbed into Chinese. No English dialogue, no English subtitles. So you end up having to spend 1.5 hours watching a movie without having a bit English training.
Panpanpan.
