My moorland

My moorland

It was the second time that I came to Beaulieu road by train. The landscape was
so stunning the first time when I came here that I couldn’t resist the temptation to come back again. As normal the start of day was hectic, rushing to the local library to renew my books, buying fruit and vegs at the local weekend market,
withdrawing some money for the train fares, etc etc…

It was around ten thirty we headed for the train station. The weather was better
than what the weather forecast predicted. Big clouds lingered half way in the
sky but gradually gave their way to the sunshine, and birds chirped happily in the branches.

It was getting a bit windier after we got off at the Beaulieu road. Heading eastwards this time, both my friend and I were excited to explore the moorlands around the station. Passing a small piece of wood there was the boundless landscape
in front of us.

The path was made of fine sand, which was very unusual for moor lands. The semi-
horses were meandering and munching away on the moor, and further away there were cars whooshing by occasionally. But except for that my friend and I were left
alone, lost in the breath-taking landscape.

Later we found a small place, which was secluded by moor bushes, to have lunch.
Lying on our blue blanket, listening to the gentle sounds in the nature, feeling
the gentle sunshine caressing my neck, I found my peace, which I guess that’s
why people long for going away, it’s so easy to relax, forget and dream away again when you are out of your usual self and place.

But our lunch was soon intruded by two benign-looking cows. Their curiosity made
them unable to move their eyes away from us and of course our food. I started to feel unsettled when my friend suddenly noticed there were more cows slowly moving towards our way. So if curiosity can kill a cat, it can certainly kill a lovely meal in our case.

We went to the edge of the forest after the lunch. The forest itself wasn’t to
our fancy on this trip. We meandered at the edge of it, enjoying the lazy afternoon sunshine and the quiet grass fields. There were thousands of small yellow buttercups blooming in the sun. And there were of course dandelions. Immersed in the sun and the nature, I almost felt surreal.

It’s so easy to get away here if you want to. I think that’s why I don’t feel
myself so trapped as I did back in Cornwall. With the accessibility of trains I
can go to most places in this country if I care to, and with a bit of planning
and physical stamina (and of course a bit of time) I can dive into every piece of land that attracts me. Sometimes I think it’s not so important to be strong as to feel strong. If you plan well you can conquer everything; and if you can conquer you will find that lots of things are made possible in this world.
