Buying Rice with Nancy
Dear Forum Friends
What is so exiting about buying rice? A good question. There are so many kinds of rice from different countries. In Canada rice is used by Canadians only sometimes. But we have people who came from other countries and to them rice is a most important staple of a daily diet. And rice has gone up in price very much in the last year. So when Nancy spotted a good buy on rice, she decided she had to get some. Now Nancy is a Canadian Lady 71 years old. Her birthday was yesterday. It so happened, that we had an extra TV set which was not needed and Mary and I had offered it to Nancy. Nancy had come from the Fillipines and rice is her main food. Nancy is now retired. A widow on a small pension. She was able lately to rent a small clean apartment with a balcony in the residential area of downtown. When I made the arrangements to bring her the TV set, she was specific as to the time, as she explained to me she had to catch a bus to go and buy rice. You see, she has no car and does not drive. Immidiately I offered to take her to the store and drive her home again. And so we went to a large supermarket about 8 minutes by car from her place. Here we took a shopping cart and then entered the store. Nancy found the rice right away in the isle near the vegetable stands. Here we found various brands of rice, but Nancy wanted only "Red Rooster Brand" rice. It came in bags of 2, 48 and 18 kilo. 18 kilo is 40 pounds in Canada. The price was lowest for this quantity. Namely $ 40.00. We took the 40 lbs bag and went to the cash register where she paid for the rice that had come from Thailand. Yes she said, for my money this is the best rice, better than Basmati which costs much more. "Nancy" I asked" How long will this rice last?" "It will be enough for two months" Nancy has the most important staple for her meals at a cost of $ 20.00 a month. Now I learned how one can live cheaply. Of course I carried the rice from the car up to her apartment. I am glad to say: I am still good for 40 pounds, but I would not want to carry 50. Best wishes Uncle Ben
